After living in Durban for more than 15 years, I’ve discovered that not all “top things to do” guides online truly depict the REAL Durban.
I’ve walked the Golden Mile at sunrise, eaten bunny chows in the markets you won’t find on Google Maps, and wasted time and money on tourist traps so you don’t have to.
I made this guide because I don’t want you to spend your trip doing things that aren’t worth your time or money.
This isn’t just another list. This is my local, honest shortlist of the best things to do in Durban – the beaches, food spots, and hidden gems that are actually worth it. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, this is how you experience Durban like a local.

1. Best Things to Do in Durban for First-Timers
For first-timers visiting Durban, it’s always perfect to start with the spots I’ve listed below. These are very friendly areas and some of my top recommendations, where you’ll feel more comfortable and truly enjoy the beauty of Durban, especially if it’s your first time. Check below for more details on each area.
The Golden Mile – Durban’s Iconic Beachfront Promenade
The Golden Mile is undeniably Durban’s most vibrant and frequented destination. Its enduring popularity among both locals and international visitors is attributed to the sheer diversity of experiences it offers. Whether you wish to walk, cycle, skate, or swim, the promenade caters to all.
Beyond its recreational appeal, the area boasts an extensive selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars, which contributes to its lively atmosphere from morning until late evening.
Notably, one of its long-standing beach bars remains a prominent landmark, renowned for its longevity and energetic ambience, particularly during the evening hours.
For families and swimmers, the Golden Mile offers two distinct public swimming options in the same area, both ideal for young children. There is a paid public pool that is well-maintained and supervised, as well as a complimentary public pool that is freely accessible to all visitors.
In addition to this, professional swimming lessons are readily available, ensuring there is an activity suited to every visitor.
A Note on Safety: As with any prominent tourist hub, it is advisable to remain vigilant regarding personal belongings. However, the Golden Mile benefits from a significant and visible security presence, including dedicated police patrols and qualified lifeguards on duty, providing added assurance for all visitors.
uShaka Marine World – Durban’s Premier Family Entertainment Complex
Continuing south along the Golden Mile towards the South Beach precinct, you will encounter uShaka Marine World – arguably Durban’s most iconic attraction.
Situated directly on the beachfront, it benefits from the same vibrant coastal atmosphere as the promenade, yet distinguishes itself as the city’s foremost family destination. This reputation is well-deserved, given the remarkable concentration of leisure and entertainment offerings within a single complex.
From extensive personal experience visiting over many years, I can attest to its consistent popularity among both domestic and international visitors. The precinct caters to all interests, encompassing swimming, beach recreation, and comprehensive family entertainment.
Its defining feature, however, is its exceptional marine biodiversity. The park houses an impressive array of marine life, making it an essential experience for nature enthusiasts and families alike. In my professional opinion, a visit to Durban is incomplete without experiencing uShaka Marine World.
Visitors should note that the complex comprises both complimentary and ticketed areas. The beachfront, retail village, and diverse selection of restaurants are freely accessible to the public, offering an array of dining options and souvenir boutiques. Access to the main aquarium and marine theme park requires an entrance fee, which represents excellent value, particularly for families.
It is, without question, an indispensable highlight of any Durban itinerary.
2. Best Outdoor & Adventure Things to Do in Durban
You may be wondering, why is Durban considered one of the best destinations for outdoor and adventure activities?
The answer is quite simple. Durban enjoys a warm climate for most of the year, and warm weather is ideal for outdoor and adventure experiences.
There are countless places to explore, from beautiful beaches and parks to hiking trails and many other activities. They all offer you the perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.
Moses Mabhida Stadium – Best for Family and Outdoor Activities
Everyone talks about Moses Mabhida Stadium – and yes, it is an iconic landmark in Durban.
However, most people are still sharing old information about it. You will see things like the SkyCar listed on many guides, but when you actually get to the stadium, those activities are no longer available. This misleads visitors who arrive expecting one thing and leave disappointed.
That is why I am here – to make sure you have accurate information and enjoy your time. Moses Mabhida Stadium is still great and very popular, and there are still activities to enjoy. Due to ongoing maintenance, some activities have been temporarily stopped and are not operating until the work is complete.
Currently, you can visit this Fresh Food With Thuladu Moses Mabhida i visited this place couple of time and have a great outdoors sitting. or experience, Segway Gliding Tours, the park, and you can walk around the stadium grounds.
Please note: The SkyCar is still not operating due to maintenance. As soon as it reopens, I will update you in a blog post, so keep checking back for the latest information.
If you are planning to use the SkyCar, you will not find it operational yet, but there are still other activities available – just not the full range.
Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve – A Tranquil Escape into Nature
If you are looking to step away from the vibrant energy of the city and immerse yourself in nature, the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve offers the perfect sanctuary.
A common question from visitors concerns the entrance fee – access to the reserve is entirely free. It is a public nature reserve, open to everyone, where you can unwind and reconnect with the natural environment, as captured in the photographs.
From my own experience, having visited regularly over the years, it has become my go-to destination whenever I seek peace and quiet. It is an ideal place to relax, reflect, and enjoy a serene atmosphere away from the crowds.
Despite being a natural forest and lagoon area, the park feels exceptionally safe and well-maintained. Visitors can be seen sitting peacefully along the trails, enjoying the calm surroundings.
Within the reserve, you will also find a charming coffee shop that operates from the morning, perfect for a light refreshment before or after your walk.
More Outdoor Adventures in the Umhlanga Area
When it comes to outdoor activities in Umhlanga, there is so much to explore, but it is important to understand that the area is divided into two distinct precincts: Umhlanga Ridge and Umhlanga Rocks on the seaside.
Umhlanga Rocks – The Seaside Experience
On the seaside, the ultimate outdoor activity is, without question, the beach. For a classic beach experience, the main beach is exceptional.
It offers safe, designated swimming areas where you can swim and relax on the sand, with shops and amenities located just steps from the shoreline. It is one of my personal favourite beaches in the greater Durban area – pristine, very safe, and patrolled by lifeguards.
As you stroll along the promenade, you will encounter the iconic Umhlanga Lighthouse. This historic landmark has stood for many years and holds significant heritage value. It is one of the most photographed icons in Umhlanga and an essential sight for any visitor.
You will also find the world-renowned Whalebone Pier. This architecturally acclaimed pier has been featured in numerous international publications for its unique design. It is an incredibly popular spot for photography, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Continuing along the coastal forest walkway, you will come across Bronze Beach – another beautiful stretch of coastline that is particularly spectacular at sunset. Visiting this entire promenade is, in my opinion, one of the best outdoor experiences you can have in Durban, and it is only a few minutes’ drive from the city centre.
Umhlanga Ridge – Parks and Leisure
If you head inland to Umhlanga Ridge, you will find a different kind of outdoor experience. There are two beautiful, tranquil parks – including Chris Saunders Park – which are completely free to enter. They offer a peaceful escape and are perfect for a relaxing walk or picnic.
You also have the opportunity to visit one of the most popular shopping destinations in South Africa. The mall offers an incredible variety of activities and entertainment, especially for families travelling with children. You will find everything you could possibly need under one roof.
In essence, Umhlanga offers the perfect balance – from historic landmarks and world-class beaches to serene parks and premium lifestyle centres.
3. Best Local Foods and Cultural Experiences in Durban
When it comes to local cuisine and cultural heritage, Durban is a true melting pot. The city has embraced a rich tapestry of Zulu, Indian, and colonial influences, resulting in a distinctive and harmonious fusion.
Consequently, visitors are presented with an abundance of authentic flavours and cultural experiences to discover.
Victoria Street Market – The Heart of Durban’s Culture and Flavour
If you want to experience the true cultural soul of Durban, the Victoria Street Market is non-negotiable.
Located in the city centre, this is one of Durban’s oldest and most iconic markets. The moment you walk in, you are greeted by a vibrant explosion of colour, sound, and aroma.
It is the epicentre of Durban’s Indian heritage – home to the largest Indian community outside of India. Inside, you will find over 200 stalls selling authentic Indian spices, fragrant incense, handcrafted jewellery, traditional clothing, and Zulu beadwork and crafts.
For food lovers, this is where you will find the best Durban curry spices to take home, freshly made samosas, and some of the most authentic Bunny Chows in the city. It is more than just a market; it is a full sensory and cultural experience. From my experience, it is the best place to buy authentic souvenirs and to truly understand Durban’s unique fusion of cultures.
Pro Tip: Go in the morning when it is less crowded, and come hungry. visit in groups. not alone if you are not familiar with the area.
Florida Road Things to Do in Durban– Durban’s Premier Lifestyle and Culinary Strip
For a more contemporary and upscale outdoor experience, Florida Road in Morningside is Durban’s most famous lifestyle street.
This heritage-lined avenue is where Durban comes to eat, socialize, and be seen. By day, it is a charming street with beautiful historic buildings, boutique cafes, art galleries, and designer shops – perfect for a leisurely stroll.
By night, it transforms into Durban’s culinary capital. It is home to some of the city’s best restaurants, from authentic Durban Indian cuisine and the city’s best Bunny Chow, to world-class seafood, sushi, and fine dining. The street is also famous for its vibrant cafe culture and cocktail bars.
What makes Florida Road special is the atmosphere. All the restaurants have beautiful outdoor seating under the trees, so you can enjoy your meal outside while people-watching. It is safe, lively, and loved by both locals and tourists.
If you want to experience Durban’s modern food scene in one street, Florida Road is the place to be.
4. Best Free Things to Do in Durban
If you are looking for relaxing, family-friendly and free things to do in Durban, these three spots are my top recommendations. I have visited them many times and they are perfect for locals and first-time visitors.
Botanical Gardens
One of the most peaceful places in Durban and my personal favourite. Entrance is completely FREE.
It’s best for families, couples, and anyone who wants to be near nature. Perfect for a picnic, a morning walk, or just sitting quietly under the big trees.
I have been there many times — it’s very safe, quiet, and well-maintained. One of the best free experiences in Durban you should not miss.
Mitchell Park – Family Friendly
Mitchell Park in Morningside is also one of the best free places to visit in Durban, especially if you are with kids.
There is a free playground for kids, benches to sit and relax, and lots of open space. It gets very busy on weekends with families, but there is free parking available.
Inside the park there is also a small zoo — entry is not free, I paid around R20 per adult last time I visited, and there are many animals inside. Best for a family day out.
Japanese Gardens – Durban North
Located in Durban North, the Japanese Gardens is another great free spot for a picnic.
It is also very busy on weekends. There is a playground for kids, but it is a bit older compared to Mitchell Park.
There are facilities for picnics and the garden is well maintained, though not as manicured as the Botanical Gardens or Mitchell Park. Still a beautiful, quiet place to relax for free.
5. Go on Safari From Durban – The Ultimate Big 5 Experience
One of the best things about staying in Durban is that you are never far from a true African safari. You do not need to fly to Kruger – some of South Africa’s best game reserves are right on Durban’s doorstep and can be done as a day trip.
Here are the 3 best safari destinations from Durban:
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park – The Historic Big 5 Reserve
This is South Africa’s oldest game reserve, established in 1895, and is about 3 hours from Durban. It is world-renowned because it saved the Southern White Rhino from extinction.
This is a true, wild, Big 5 reserve spanning over 98,000 hectares where you can see Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhino in their natural habitat. Perfect for a full-day safari from Durban.
Tala Game Reserve – The Closest Safari to Durban
If you are short on time, Tala is the answer. Located only 45-50 minutes from Durban, it is ideal for a half-day safari.
You will enjoy a 4×4 game drive through rolling hills spotting rhinos, giraffes, zebras, kudus, hippos, impalas and many species of antelope. It is safe, serene, and perfect for families and couples.
Manyoni Private Game Reserve – The Exclusive Private Reserve
For a more exclusive and luxurious experience, Manyoni Private Game Reserve is considered one of KwaZulu-Natal’s premier private reserves. Located about 3 hours from Durban in the heart of Zululand, it was originally formed as part of the WWF Black Rhino expansion project.
Here you get an authentic open-vehicle off-road safari with strictly limited vehicles at sightings, making it feel much more private and wild. It is often combined with Hluhluwe-iMfolozi for the ultimate 2-reserve day trip.
