2. Bronze Beach Umhlanga- SAFE #2
This is Bronze Beach in Umhlanga Rocks — also called Breakers Beach by locals. It’s the longest beach here, about 650 meters long, right in front of Breakers Resort at 88 Lagoon Drive.
What makes it different from Main Beach is the rocks. The shoreline has these dark, flat rocks as you can see. that appear at low tide — great for photos and exploring tide pools, but not great if you want to swim far out. Locals say if you want to go swimming deeper, it’s very rocky out there. For playing in the surf and family time, it’s perfect.
It’s less crowded than Umhlanga Main Beach, it has lifeguards on duty, a beautiful wooden boardwalk through coastal forest, and it’s famous for clean water and good surf. At the south end you have the Whalebone Pier — amazing for sunset.

3. Umdloti Beach – SAFE #3
Umdloti (eMdloti) is a small, family-friendly beach village on KZN’s Dolphin Coast, just 10 minutes north of Umhlanga and 15 minutes from King Shaka Airport.
Unlike busy Umhlanga Main, it has a quiet village vibe. It’s set at the mouth of the Mdloti River, about 24km north-east of Durban, and is famous for its huge natural tidal pool. 0d62.
It’s one of three stretches of beach in Umdloti and is Blue Flag, with shark nets and lifeguards. Rated 4.5/5 by visitors for being clean, safe and quiet. 2294.

4. La Lucia Beach, Umhlanga
La Lucia Beach is one of the quietest and most local beaches in Umhlanga. It is located between Umhlanga Main Beach(Lighthouse Beach) and Glenashley Beach, just after Virginia Beach if you are walking from the north on Durban.
This is not a touristy beach like Main Beach. There are no big restaurants or shops right on the beach, which is exactly why locals love it. It’s clean, peaceful, and never overcrowded, even in December.
The beach is wide with soft golden sand and small dunes. It feels very natural and relaxed compared to the high-rise hotels of Umhlanga Rocks.
Swimming and Safety at La Lucia Beach, Umhlanga
Can you swim at La Lucia Beach? No. It’s beautiful but it’s not a swimming beach. No lifeguards and no shark nets. If you want to swim, go to Umhlanga Main Beach.
Most locals don’t swim there. They go there for:

- Fishing
- Surfing (for experienced surfers only)
- Dog walking
- Sunset and relaxing – that’s why it feels so natural and quiet
There are no shops on the beach itself – bring your water and snacks. The nearest shops and restaurants are a 2-minute drive at La Lucia Mall or along the promenade.
