Why is this hotel so famous? Its prime beachfront location. This five-star property is a preferred choice for travellers and celebrities visiting Durban,

Why The Oyster Box is The Most Famous Hotel in Durban My Experience
I first went to The Oyster Box in 2025. From outside it looks like a colonial-style red and white building. Inside, it is pure luxury.
What makes it different from other Durban hotels:
- Location: It is ON the beach. You walk out and you are on Umhlanga Main Beach. The Umhlanga Lighthouse is literally opposit the hotel property.
- Safe Area: Umhlanga Rocks is the safest part of Durban. You can walk at night to restaurants and bars.
- Service: Staff call you by name. They remember how you like your coffee. I have never seen service like this in South Africa.
- It’s not just a hotel, it’s an experience: They have a famous cat – Skabenga the hotel cat, they have high tea, they have a private cinema. You feel like you are in a movie.

Prices change by season, but here is what I found from my last check. December prices are almost double.
- Classic Room – From R8,125 per night
Perfect for couples. Garden view, 30 sqm, king bed. I stayed in this one. Very clean and quiet. - Luxury Sea Facing Room – From R13,750 per night
My favorite for value. You see the ocean and lighthouse from your bed. Balcony, bigger bathroom. - Ocean Terrace Suite – From R28,000 per night
Huge, 60 sqm. Separate lounge. This is what celebrities book. Private terrace with sea view. - Deluxe Suite with Sea View – From R29,700 per night
Located on the lower ground level with private plunge pools and terraces, the Deluxe Suites provide guests with luxurious bedrooms and separate lounge areas..
My Tip: Prices are cheapest from May to August (winter). Book 2 months early for December. Prices on Booking.com are cheaper than walk-in.
What’s Inside The Oyster Box? – Facilities I Have Tried
- Pools: They have 2 pools. One main pool facing the ocean, and a quiet adult pool. Both are heated.
- The Grill Room & Ocean Terrace: I had lunch at Ocean Terrace – best seafood curry in Durban. Grill Room is fine dining, you need to dress smart.
- Spa: World-class. I did not do full spa, but I saw it. Private treatment rooms with ocean sound.
- High Tea: The Oyster Box is famous for High Tea. R595 per adult and R395 per child under 12 years old. You must book. I tasted it – cakes, scones, sandwiches with sea view.
- For Kids: They have a kids club and cinema. So families love it too.
Location – How Far From Airport & Things To Do
- From King Shaka Airport: 20 minutes by car / Uber. Very close. I took Uber, it was R250.
- To Umhlanga Beach: 1 minute walk. You are on the beach.
- To Oceans Mall & The Pearls: 5 minutes walk. This is where nightlife is – Havana Beach Bar, Epic Rooftop.
- To Durban CBD / Florida Road: 25 minutes drive.
You don’t need a car if you stay in Umhlanga. Everything is walking distance.
My Honest Pros & Cons After Visiting
PROS:
- Best location in Durban – beachfront + lighthouse
- Safest area in Durban, you can walk at night
- Service is 10/10 – best in South Africa
- Perfect for honeymoon, anniversary, or luxury holiday
- Close to best nightlife and restaurants
CONS:
- Expensive – not for budget travelers
- Rooms in old wing are a bit small for the price
- December is too busy, book early or you won’t get it
- No self-catering – it’s 5-star, so you pay for everything
Should You Book The Oyster Box? My Final Verdict
If you want to experience real luxury in Durban and you want to be safe, close to the beach and nightlife, book The Oyster Box.
It is expensive, but it is worth every cent. I have been to many hotels in Durban – Blue Waters, Beverly Hills, Umhlanga Sands – nothing comes close to Oyster Box.
If you are on a budget, book one night here for the experience, then move to a cheaper hotel in Umhlanga. My advice. Book for 2 nights minimum. One night is not enough to enjoy it.
Where to Book The Oyster Box Cheapest
Don’t book at reception – it’s most expensive. I always compare on Booking.com and Trip.com via Travelpayouts. Usually Booking.com has free cancellation.
